It’s January. A new year is here. The holiday glitter is gone, replaced by the wet, cool sternness of winter. January is ‘the virtuous month’. Like the weather, we become serious and spare, renouncing indulgences and steeling ourselves with commitments and resolve to make changes, do more and better. We dive into action, fueled with a sense of speed to accomplish whatever we’ve set our sights on.
But as any coach, trainer or gym rat will tell you, maximum growth and change only happens when activity is followed by rest. So,in the interests of supporting whatever resolutions you’ve made, we at L’Amyx fully encourage’braking’ on a regular basis. We are all for ‘the sip and the savor’,rather than the ‘gulp and go’.
We remind you that it’s National Hot Tea month—an excellent reason to sample (slowly) new teas and old favorites frequently. You might begin, for instance, by trying our brand new, exclusive line of organic green teas. Or should you prefer to do your sampling and repose at home, consider joining our Tea of the Month Club, and have new teas arrive at your doorstep. No effort required. And with Chinese New Year starting on January 29th, we know that you can start another new year at the end of this month.
So why rush to the future now, when it will begin again so soon? Relax. Exhale. Drink some tea as if were the axis of the earth, and you may just find that you have all the space and time in the world.
Happy New Year! May it be wonder-filled. —Sue
The Basics
“January’s National Hot Tea Month can serve as a reminder to do something healthy for ourselves, like brew a hot cup of tea, which may provide a variety of health benefits, serve as a weight loss aid and help to ward off persistent cold and flu germs,” said Joe Simrany, president of the Tea Council of the USA. “What more could you ask for in a beverage.”
Our sentiments exactly. What more could you ask for?
We don’t know. And that’s just the point of this newly named newsletter segment. In 2005, we called this section “Education”, and wrote throughout the year about various things related to tea—types, techniques, history, even health benefits. It, was, to be honest, all based on what we thought you might like to know about tea. But we never asked you.
Time for a change. With this edition, we’re renaming the section “The Basics”,and asking you for ideas. What would you like to know about tea?
Send questions,ideas,and comments to “info@lamyx.com”.

When one is the daughter of a Foreign Service worker, one lives all over the world. When one’s mother is a native of Japan, one grows up drinking green tea. Put them together, and you get Aki’s peripatetic childhood spent in Asia and Latin America, where the teapot never went empty and the tea was always green.
“I was in my 20s before I got accustomed to the notion of sweetening tea or putting milk into it”, says Aki.“I used to think it very funny that my boyfriend put sugar in tea in Chinese restaurants.” Yup. Most green tea or oolong lovers would be faintly appalled at the idea. So how did your family maintain their tea-drinking habits in coffee-centric countries like Peru, Panama and El Salvador, or among the black tea adherents of New Zealand?, we asked.
“My mother and grandmother”,replied Aki.“Teas would be sent to us from Japan, or we’d bring it back after regular trips to visit my grandmother. We just drank tea all day long. The pot kept getting refilled.”.
Old habits die hard, which means green tea like Jasmine is still a favorite at her home. But to her mild chagrin, Aki has become a die-hard fan of bubble tea. A sweetened tea with milk? Ah well. As she says, it’s “better than coffee”.Who are we to disagree?
